TFC Open Tournament – Foil & Epee
What an exciting night!
We started the evening with Foil. Samuel Taylor, Isaac Williams, Gabriel Wormuth, AJ Rooks, James Rooks and Reece Morrel made up the pool of contestants.
As our newest fencers, Samuel and Isaac did very well – mixing it up and offering a few surprises of their own. Samuel defeated Gabriel, a more experienced fencer.
The competition between AJ and Gabriel was intense since they were in the same beginning class 2 years ago. AJ’s style was more finesse going against Gabriel’s style of confrontation and aggression.
The spectators especially enjoyed the Gold medal 15-point match-up between James and Reece. (James handily won their 5-point bout during the pool rounds.) Intensity, strategy, and stamina all played a role during this see-saw bout. In the end, the 15-13 point match wen to Reece Morrel.
With Reece Morrel taking the Gold medal (1st place), the Father/Son team of James and AJ took the Silver medal (2nd place) and Bronze medal (3rd place) in Foil.
By now, the crowd was really excited and ready for the Epee matches to begin. Running 3 strips, Gabriel Wormuth, Mackenzie Doty, Yul Shaffer, James Rooks, Jeff Starkweather and Reece Morrel were kept busy during the pool bouts.
Reece and Yul faced off during the Bronze medal bouts. Having lost to Yul during the pool competition, Reece tried some different strategies and techniques. As a result, Reece quickly captured an early lead. But, Yul was able to adapt and improvise. He then caught up to Reece and won by a decisive margin.
The stage was then set for the Gold Medal round between James and Jeff. During the pool competition earlier, the victory had gone to James. But none of that mattered now. Using his height advantage, James tried to “outreach” Jeff. This meant that Jeff had to remain alert and rely upon his quickness. The crowd was not disappointed as the two Titans squared off for their slug fest. Alas, there could only be one winner – Jeff!
The final tally, Jeff Starkweather took the Gold Medal (1st place), James took home his 2nd Silver Medal (2nd place) of the night, and Yul, fencing in one of his first tournaments, took home the Bronze Medal (3rd place).
Congratulations to our winners, and a heart-felt thank-you to all our competitors for making the evening so exciting!
